Dental Care for Children: Habits That Build Healthy Smiles
A parent-friendly guide to brushing, snacks, dental visits, thumb sucking, and protecting primary teeth.
Start early and make it consistent
Clean an infant’s gums gently and begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Young children need an adult to brush for them or supervise closely because coordination develops gradually.
Make fluoride toothpaste safe and useful
Use the amount recommended for your child’s age by a dental professional, encourage spitting rather than rinsing repeatedly, and keep toothpaste stored safely. Ask the clinic about local fluoride guidance.
Protect teeth between meals
Water is the best everyday drink between meals. Frequent sweet drinks, sticky snacks, and bedtime bottles can increase decay risk. If a child uses a bottle, avoid filling it with sweetened liquids.
Make visits familiar
A first visit should be a positive introduction, not something reserved for pain. Tell children the dentist will count and look at their teeth, avoid frightening language, and share any concerns about anxiety or sensory needs in advance.
