How to Prevent Tooth Decay: A Practical Daily Guide
Understand why cavities form and build a simple routine that protects teeth at every age.
Brush for effectiveness, not just speed
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice daily. Angle the bristles toward the gumline, use gentle small movements, and clean every surface, including the backs of the front teeth. Replace a brush when the bristles become splayed.
Clean between teeth
A toothbrush cannot reliably reach the contact points between teeth. Use floss, interdental brushes, or another method recommended by your dental professional. Cleaning between teeth removes plaque where cavities and gum inflammation often begin.
Reduce how often teeth are exposed to sugar
The frequency of sweet drinks, snacks, and sticky foods matters because each exposure can create an acidic attack. Keep sweet items with meals where possible, choose water between meals, and avoid sipping sweetened drinks over long periods.
Do not ignore early warning signs
Sensitivity, a rough edge, food trapping, white or brown marks, or persistent bad breath deserves a dental assessment. Early care is usually simpler than waiting for severe pain or swelling.
